The Scottish Government works to make Scotland a more successful country and a better place to live. Having the right people producing and communicating powerful analysis is vital to helping us achieve this.

In return, we'll offer you an incredible opportunity to work across the Scottish Government in areas like Health, Education and the Economy, informing important decisions with high profile analysis right from the start.

You will be supported and encouraged to work right across the range of policy areas affecting people's lives.

Further information about Statistics group can be found at:

There are a range of interesting and challenging Assistant Statistician posts available across analytical services. The subject you work on initially will depend on your skills and experience, and the needs of the Government. You will be expected to move posts around every three years to gain a broad experience and knowledge of statistical work in different areas and develop the necessary skills for promotion. A wide range of courses and other training opportunities are available. We actively encourage training and development throughout your career, to help you develop a broad range of skills and develop your potential. We can also offer good promotion opportunities to more senior roles (subject to posts being available).

Qualifications Required
You should have one of the following:
• A minimum of a 2:2 degree in a numerate discipline such as mathematics, economics, psychology or geography. Your degree should contain some formal statistical training.
• A PhD or Master's Degree which contains a high level of statistics or numerate content.

We also welcome applications from candidates who do not have a degree in a numerate discipline but can demonstrate significant experience in a statistics related field, plus continuing professional development in a relevant area that leads to qualifications (for example the new Open University Professional Certificate in Practical Statistics).

Further information on qualifications that may make you eligible to apply for this vacancy can be found in the "Person Specification and Further Information for Job Applicants" which can be found below. If you have not yet completed your degree or relevant post graduate qualification, any job offer will be conditional on this.

Please note: If you fail to demonstrate how you meet the minimum qualifications as stated above, your application will be automatically sifted out.

Essential Criteria
1. Experience of data management, using statistical skills to meet business needs and maintaining professional knowledge.
2. Capable of working in a team, motivating others, balancing the needs of the work, the individual and the team, and aware of the impact of your behaviour and actions on others.
3. Take responsibility for planning your work; making decisions, solving problems, dealing with challenges, and embracing new ways of doing things.
4. Able to build effective relationships with users of your analysis and experience of communicating technical concepts to others who may not share your technical background.

Important Information Regarding Interviews
In recognition of the Scottish Government's ongoing measures and guidance in its response to Covid-19 (Coronavirus), we would like to advise applicants that a decision has been taken that all interviews must be conducted in a virtual/remote setting.

In order to facilitate this new way of working, we are asking all applicants to ensure that they have a suitable space to complete the virtual interview as well as a personal device of choice with an account registered to the 'Zoom' app by which you can undertake the interview/assessment if selected. We are also asking you to ensure that your personal Wi-Fi/Broadband capacity will be sufficient to carry both audio and video feeds to undertake the interview. This will then ensure that there are no issues incurred during the interview.
