We are currently seeking applications for Assistant Statisticians in various departments across Scottish Government and National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh, with a limited number of positions available in Glasgow. These are permanent and pensionable appointments and new entrants will normally start on the minimum of the pay range. There are a range of interesting and challenging Assistant Statistician posts available across analytical services. The subject you work on initially will depend on your skills and experience, and the needs of the Government. You will be expected to move posts around every three years to gain a broad experience and knowledge of statistical work in different areas and develop the necessary skills for promotion. A wide range of courses and other training opportunities are available. We actively encourage training and development throughout your career, to help you develop a broad range of skills and develop your potential. We can also offer good promotion opportunities to more senior roles (subject to posts being available).

Qualifications Required
You should have one of the following:
• A minimum of a 2:2 degree in a numerate discipline such as mathematics, economics, psychology or geography. Your degree should contain some formal statistical training.
• A PhD or Master's Degree which contains a high level of statistics or numerate content.

We also welcome applications from candidates who do not have a degree in a numerate discipline but can demonstrate significant experience in a statistics related field, plus continuing professional development in a relevant area that leads to qualifications (for example the new Open University Professional Certificate in Practical Statistics).

1. Experience of data management, using statistical skills to meet business needs and maintaining professional knowledge.
2. Capable of working in a team, motivating others, balancing the needs of the work, the individual and the team, and aware of the impact of your behaviour and actions on others.
3. Take responsibility for planning your work; making decisions, solving problems, dealing with challenges, and embracing new ways of doing things.
4. Able to build effective relationships with users of your analysis and experience of communicating technical concepts to others who may not share your technical background.
