Salary:
£32,910 - £39,880 per annum
Working Pattern: Full time, 37 hours per week
Location: County Hall, Chichester

This role is all about providing professional expertise on archaeology. You will represent the County Council at relevant meetings and be an authoritative advocate for the historic environment of West Sussex.


As the County Archaeologist, you will also be responsible for advising other business units on the implications of their work, overseeing the provision of, and directly providing, specialist advice to the County Council in relation to its own developments and its statutory planning role as the County Planning Authority and as the Highway Authority. You will supervise the work of other specialists and provide mentoring and professional support as required.


You will need to be able to travel independently to various sites around the county, some in remote locations, and to attend other external meetings and workplaces. There may be an occasional requirement to work outside in inclement weather, to wear appropriate protective equipment and / or to attend disagreeable or hazardous environments, for example site visits to inspect dilapidated buildings where care is needed. There may also be a need to climb ladders or work in confined spaces at times. There is a regular and intrinsic requirement to communicate in English.


Experience and Skills


Key Skills: 

  1. Ability to research, analyse and interpret complex specialist information to make effective and robust judgements and write reports which make a variety of articulate recommendations for alterations to development plans, produced over the long term.
  2. Ability to quickly assimilate information; consider the issues, risks and legal implications and to adopt the most appropriate course of action.
  3. Able to demonstrate higher level thinking skills, to think through issues, make connections and establish solutions which draw on this bigger picture view of climate change. Able to make connections between disparate issues, and creatively combine solutions to solve multiple problems.
  4. Ability to organise/prioritise work, co-ordinate a variety of tasks in a clear and logical way and meet agreed deadlines which minimise the disruption to the business.
  5. Excellent writing skills including the ability to write clear, comprehensive and appropriate information for reports, articles and briefing papers.
  6. Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence the actions of others and communicate information which may be complex and contentious. Including the ability to negotiate solutions across wide areas of the business and successfully convince others of the need to take a specific course of action.

Qualifications and/or experience: 

  • Degree in a relevant archaeological discipline
  • Membership of an appropriate professional body, e.g. the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience in historic environment-related management, or an equivalent area, including experience of carrying out more complex work in one of the following areas: project management, providing high level complex advice, development of a day-to- day service (i.e. planning work programmes or undertaking or policy/ practice reviews).
  • Experience of successfully negotiating in confrontational situations.
  • Experience of using relevant policy and legislation to guide decision making.
  • Relevant advanced theoretical or organisational knowledge of systems, procedures and policies in archaeology.
  • Sound and accurate IT knowledge to produce reports and monitor statistics, create and modify technical drawings, manipulate and analyse data. Experience with the Historic Buildings Sites and Monument Record (HBSMR by Exegesis).
  • Knowledge of Local Government and its responsibilities for planning, transport as it relates to the historic environment
