Role Overview Within Quantum Science (QS) R&D group, we have an exciting new opportunity for a Senior Material Scientist who will take a pivotal and lead role in research and development of nanomaterials and fabrication of devices based on the developed nanomaterials for optoelectronic applications. Our company is based in Daresbury National Laboratory, Warrington Main tasks and responsibility • Report to Head of R&D • Provide technical lead in research and development of semiconductor nanoparticles. These include design, synthesis, and characterisation of nanomaterials o Plan development work and experimental strategies for a different type of nanomaterials o Synthesise different type of semiconductor nanomaterials o Routine characterisation of nanomaterials using different techniques o Analyse data and suggest solutions to improve target properties • Conduct surface modification of nanomaterials to make them compatible with the required media/matrix • Design and conduct fabrication of optoelectronic devices based on the developed nanomaterials • Prepare and submit progress technical reports, invention disclosure/patents clearly and accurately in timely manner to provide competitive advantage and protect QS’s IP • Actively contribute ideas to the team and the company Skills and Experience • PhD in chemistry, material science or equivalent degree covering nanomaterials, colloidal chemistry, organometallic and/or inorganic synthesis. Preferred independent post-doc or research fellow or relevant industrial experience. • Excellent synthetic chemistry skills. Experience of inert atmosphere techniques and semiconductor nanocrystals synthesis and characterisation. • Experience of surface modification of nanoparticles and planar substrates • Experience of leading novel research project from concept proposal to prototype development including building chemistry and device fabrication labs from scratch • Excellent record of scientific research papers published in high impact factor journals and patents in the field of nanocrystals and optoelectronic devices • Require to be creative and innovative to generate and implement ideas • Grant writing experience • Critical thinking/problem solving • Excellent verbal and written communication skills • Good presentation skills • Well organised and ability to manage and juggle many different priorities • Ability to plan and prioritise and address forthcoming issues • Good numeric skills • IT skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
• Achieving project milestones • Reporting results to Head of R&D in a timely manner • All invention disclosures/ patents filed in a timely manner • All samples are sent to other teams and customers in a timely manner • Perform proper characterisation on samples • Identify needed equipment and carry out procurement if necessary
