About Us


Here at West Sussex County Council (WSCC) we have two new Solicitor opportunities in our Legal Services team. This team aims to provide the best possible legal and insurance service to the Council. In these roles you would be working within the Commercial Team in Legal Services to provide a quality legal service and advice to all areas of the Council. Key areas for this role include commercial contracts, procurement, construction contracts, public health contracts, IT contracts, frameworks and concession contracts. 


The WSCC Career Progression Scheme allows fee earners to progress depending on qualifications and relevant experience. Solicitors will be expected to complete any formal post qualification training and examination required by the Law Society. Progression through the grade will be achieved by successful performance of specific and general work areas.


About The Job


Salary:
£36,922 - £43,857 per annum
Working Pattern: Full-time (37 hours per week)
Location: County Hall, Chichester 



Your primary focus will be to provide clear and balanced advice to client services across the Council in relation to various contractual and procurement matters. You will run a mixed case load of commercial contracts, procurement matters, construction and building contracts, public health contracts, IT contracts, framework agreements and concession contracts. You will undertake negotiation and drafting of contracts and advising clients across the Council with your own caseload


You will undertake technical and complex research which requires developed interpretation and analytical skills as well as partnership working with both colleagues and clients in order to deliver a solution on a range of contractual and procurement issues. You will be engaged in often complex and interesting work within an experienced, supportive team which develops and values its staff.


Experience and Skills


You will be a qualified solicitor or barrister preferably with relevant experience in relation to commercial contracts, procurement and construction contracts within either a public and or private sector background However applications from newly qualified solicitors, or solicitors looking to change their field of expertise are also welcome as appropriate training can be given.


In addition you will also be able to demonstrate the following key skills and experience:


Key Skills: 

  1. Effective drafting and report writing skills.
  2. Fully competent research skills.
  3. Sound organisational skills.
  4. Competent negotiating skills.
  5. Ability to analyse and advise on legislative and regulatory text and other legal materials and to present arguments in written form.
  6. Flexible and adaptable within the range of work for the post.
  7. Sound IT skills in order to use the case management system and to produce documents.

Qualifications and/or experience: 

  • Qualified solicitor or barrister.
  • Relevant chartered status of a professional body or equivalent high-level experience of involved practices.
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering a quality customer focused service to others in either the public or private sector.
