Job Purpose As the Electricity System Operator (ESO) for Great Britain we are in a privileged position. We sit at the heart of the energy system, balancing electricity supply and demand second by second. We keep the lights on and the electricity flowing directly to where it’s needed. We are also thinking about where our energy will come from in the future and how we will operate a greener and cleaner system. One of the goals we have set for ourselves is to be able to run a zero-carbon electricity system by 2025. This will be instrumental in helping the UK meet its wider zero-carbon target. The ESO is an exciting place to work – we have ambitious goals to meet and are transforming the way we work using technology and innovation to do things differently. Our business plan sets out what we’ll do from April 2021 onwards to meet the challenges of the future and deliver cleaner and affordable energy. Have a read! We Are Looking For Data is one of our most important assets. The energy system is decarbonising and generation will become increasingly decentralised. We need to harness and analyse an ever-increasing amount of data that flows faster than ever-before to continue to do our job. The transition to net zero will require radical change across the whole energy industry and robust data analysis is critical to ensuring that transition is timely. smooth, and cost effective. There are many areas of work that help support the transition to net zero and interim targets such as our ambition to be able to run a carbon free system in 2025. Depending on the role, this may include:
Our Future Energy Scenarios analysis, which proposes possible futures for the energy system between now and 2050, to guide investment decisions in the energy industry
Our Network Options Assessment economic analysis, which recommends the pathway for multi-billion-pound transmission investment whilst delivering consumer value
Our Operability Strategy report, which assesses and communicates future operability challenges.
Our security of supply modelling for the Capacity Market and Summer / Winter Outlook Reports that helps to ensure we have enough supply to meet demand for the country.
And for those of you who are interested in the crossover between data and digital, you could also develop transformational tools that will provide invaluable insights that are necessary to ensure the delivery of our net-zero carbon ambition and other strategic goals.
