The Respiratory Clinical Research Group led by Professor Ferreira has unique expertise in host-pathogen interactions in respiratory infection, particularly at the mucosal interface. The group investigates human immune responses involved in susceptibility and protection against respiratory pathogens and the impact of co-infection with different respiratory pathogens. In addition, the group manages a portfolio of vaccine evaluation studies. The post holder will support the team in microbiological and immunological assays.

Key Responsibilities are (but not limited to):

  • Ensure appropriate records of sample processing and data analysis
  • Perform DNA and RNA extractions from human samples
  • Perform different assays (ELISAS, ELISpot, Luminex) and report on results
  • Maintenance and running of laboratory equipment
  • Undertake laboratory duties as required
  • Liaise and work collaboratively with other members of the team
  • Comply with all good working laboratory practices and health and safety regulations

The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as an integral, dynamic and flexible member of fast-paced multi-disciplinary research team. Ideally you will be able to demonstrate:

  • BSc or MSc in a relevant Biological Science
  • Knowledge of molecular methods
  • Experience with cell culture and assays
  • Knowledge of safety regulations such as HTA, HSE, GLP and GCP
  • Relevant experience of working within a research laboratory
  • Experience of handling clinical samples (desirable)
  • Numeracy skills with the ability to collate data
  • Ability to liaise with suppliers, order laboratory equipment and consumables

You will work in the Respiratory Infection and Vaccine Group that operates cross-site at Liverpool University Hospital Foundation Trust (LUHFT) and LSTM. The Respiratory Infection and Vaccine group is positioned within the new Liverpool Life Sciences Accelerator Building (LLSA), in close proximity to the Royal Hospital site of LUHFT (with a Phase 1 fully NHRA accredited Clinical Research Unit), LSTM and the University of Liverpool. The new ‘Accelerator’ is a £25m state of the art research building that is a joint venture between LUHFT and LSTM. It is the first development in the creation of a city centre health campus – The Knowledge Quarter.
