Marine mussels can attach various wet surfaces via a unique adhesive structure, the plaques. Mussel plaques can maintain high performance, long–lasting anchorages that allow mussels to survive the significant dynamic forces exerted by the turbulent tidal currents as well as by the attack from predators. Understanding of the mechanics and mechanisms of how marine mussel plaques interact with wet surfaces can contribute toward developing bioinspired engineering solutions such as high performance adhesive materials, novel approaches for joining dissimilar materials as well as high performance lightweight structures.

The successful candidate will participate in an exciting project funded by Leverhulme Trust entitled “Mechanics and bio mimicking of marine mussel plaque-substratum interactions”. You are expected to conduct cutting edge experimental investigation and numerical study toward characterising and understanding the complex mechanical responses of marine mussel plaques attached to wet substrates. You will be responsible for disseminating research outcome through conferences and top peer reviewed journal publications. You will have the opportunity to use your initiative and creativity to identify areas for research, develop research methods and extend your research portfolio.
