Job Summary

To perform a comprehensive range of ultrasound procedures without supervision, both within the department and externally, e.g. Wards, intensive care etc when required.
To independently interpret ultrasound images, producing comprehensive final clinical reports and to communicate information regarding diagnosis/treatment directly with clinicians and patients.
To contribute towards the efficient deployment of resources, enabling the patient to receive a safe, accurate and timely examination.

Key Responsibilities
• To ensure professional and technical standards are maintained at all times using a high level of specialist knowledge in line with local, regional and national guidelines where appropriate.
• To work as an autonomous practitioner performing a range of ultrasound examinations and to issue independent reports directly to the referring clinician in accordance with BMUS/SCoR protocols.
• To perform more specialised ultrasound examinations where required, e.g. to mark sites on the chest and abdomen prior to procedures for aspiration and drainage.
• To ensure imaging procedures are carried out in accordance with mandatory departmental systems of work and protocols.
• To adapt technique to the condition of the patient and level of co-operation.
• To actively maintain and develop high standards of patient care, maintaining patient dignity during examinations of an intimate nature.
• To be aware of the importance of other diagnostic investigations. To make recommendations for additional imaging, assessment and referral where necessary.

• To audit and evaluate own practice with peers, work within and contribute to the multi-disciplinary team.
• To take responsibility for the implementation and outcome of own professional decision / actions.
• To play an active role in the implementation and development of quality assurance programmes including departmental audit and clinical governance activities, collecting data when required.
Organisational Responsibilities
To maintain the confidentiality of the respective workplace in respect of patient and staff information obtained at all times, and use such information only as authorised for specific purposes. Report any concerns about the use of such information to the senior manager.
• To prioritise the workload of patients with acute illness or injury.
• To assess the urgency and appropriateness of an Ultrasound referral given the clinical history. Where necessary, have direct discussions with clinicians/patients as to additional relevant information.
• To support and supervise staff in your charge, communicating effectively and accurately your instructions and expectations.
Personal Responsibilities
The post-holder is responsible for taking reasonable care with regard to himself/ herself as well as for any colleagues, patients or visitors who might be affected by any act or failure to act by the post-holder in accordance with the Ann Physiocare’s policies on Health and Safety at Work.
• To report any accident, untoward incident or loss relating to staff, patients or visitors according to Trust policies.
To undertake in-service training relevant to the post.
Communication
• To communicate verbally and in writing the final clinical reports on Ultrasound examination to referring clinicians.
• To communicate effectively with patients and carers of varying abilities and understanding.
• To impart sensitive/ distressing information and discuss complicated issues when necessary with patients and their relatives in a clear and empathic way.
• To liaise with multidisciplinary teams regarding examination needs and results.



Technical
To ensure the safe use of Ultrasound and associated equipment.
To develop a comprehensive knowledge of the Radiology Information System and PACS.
To take part in evaluation and selection of Ultrasound equipment appropriate to the clinical need.
Staff Development, Training and Education
• The post holder will be required to undertake mandatory training and is responsible for keeping this training up to date
• The post holder will have an appraisal of performance each year and will be responsible for agreeing a development plan in discussion with their manager or immediate supervisor. The development plan will be reviewed each year
• Ann Physiocare will provide assistance and agreed development to enable the post holder to achieve their objectives and standards in line with the development plan
• To take responsibility for identifying own training needs as part of the staff appraisal programme.
• To play an active part in the induction, practical training and supervision of other staff.
To maintain a CPD portfolio in line with professional Registration requirements.
Health and Safety
• Work in accordance with Health and Safety regulations at all time
• Report any incidents of breaches of Health and Safety and report any dangerous acts or omissions that are seen in the course of duty that compromise the Health and Safety of staff or patients using the Health and Safety policy
• Assist when required to do so, in any risk assessment activity undertaken.
