About the Department
Transmission operates under licence as Scottish Hydro Electric (SHE) Transmission plc, responsible for the transmission of electricity in the north of Scotland. We own and maintain the 132kV, 275kV and 400kV electricity transmission network in our licence area. Our network comprises of underground cables, overhead wooden poles, steel towers and electricity substations, and it extends over a quarter of the UK land mass across some of its most challenging terrain.
What is the Role?
SSE Transmission is in a period of rapid growth in response to the significant growth in renewable generation connections meeting the UK climate change and renewable generation targets.
To meet this expansion, we have an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Transmission Operations and Planning Engineer based within our Transmission Control Centre in Perth. As a Transmission Operations and Planning Engineer you will ensure that outages are coordinated efficiently and customer security is maintained, arranging operational safety and control room workload within the current year up to day ahead.
You will also support development and review of future years outage plans for transition into the current year. You will carry out system analysis to confirm outage patterns are acceptable and operational queries are managed daily. You will help plan the delivery of transmission projects to ensure that the transmission system operates reliably and effectively.
Please note, this expansion is outlined in our Business Plan for RIIO-T2 (2021-26), as we develop towards a 'Network for Net Zero emissions through the period. It includes the introduction of new technologies such as DC Subsea Links and FACTS devices, alongside other major network reinforcements.
What do I need?
To be considered for this role you will be qualified to at least HNC level in electrical engineering and preferably have a relevant background in Transmission Operations.
Ideally you will have a sound knowledge and understanding of electrical power systems and the related design standards, however, you will have the opportunity to develop your technical skills within the team.
This role requires not only the application of technical knowledge, but it is essential you will have strong communication skills to engage with project managers, engineers, stakeholders, and National Grid Electricity System Operator. You will have the enthusiasm and ability to integrate with key stakeholders and the skill to challenge the delivery team.
