Who is Staffordshire University?

Staffordshire University is an award-winning institution with over 100 years’ experience in delivering excellent higher education. Our main Stoke-on-Trent campus is located in the heart of the UK, with Centres of Excellence located in the towns of Stafford and Shrewsbury.

After a highly successful year in 2019, which included entering THE World University rankings for the first time, securing TEF Gold, and climbing in all the league tables, our University has constantly expanded its physical presence through new and industry-leading building developments and facilities. Looking towards our 2030 strategy, we are now transforming specific business processes to improve the student experience and integrate a wider feeling of inclusion and safety for our on-campus community.

About the role

We are seeking a highly committed, motivated and enthusiastic person to join our team on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership funded project.

Background to the role:

Crime scene forensic technology is constantly developing and there is an urgent need for first responders to have skill sets to ensure evidence is identified, recovered, and acted upon. The project will develop training packages using digital techniques which are fit for future crime scenes.

The project requires the creation of new knowledge to enable the development of a more sophisticated training system. The knowledge transfer required is largely the artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning techniques to enable VRSS to experiment with a greater range of ‘what if’ scenarios to test the decision-making process. For example, using characters to create virtual role play relies upon representation of human behaviour models which work with (AI) approaches to enhance the belief of virtual reality (VR) experiences. Capturing user data will be a key aspect of the knowledge transfer.

The Associate will have Bachelor's degree, 2.1 or 1st and preferably a postgraduate degree in Computer Science. This should give them a sound knowledge of multiple programming languages with emphasis on C# and the Unity game engine as these are the requirements for the COPS training development and new scenario content. The COPS training scenarios are developed in this framework and an established knowledge base will allow quicker integration to the development of forensic content and expanding the solutions further. It is desirable for the Associate to have experience developing Virtual Reality simulations especially if this involved Serious Games content. An understanding of how to train, test and validate deep learning models is desirable in order to develop intelligent AI and systems for COPS scenarios. It is desirable that they have gained at least 2 years of commercial experience in a similar or relevant industry to demonstrate their experience on similar projects, ideally from inception to delivery. The Associate will be a team player so as to allow them to integrate with the VRSS programmers and artists. They should be dependable and have good interpersonal skills and be effective communicators. The Associate should be skilled in planning and able to meet agreed deadlines.

In return for your dedication we have a competitive benefits package available
