Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. Located on the Harwell Science & Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire a 20-minute drive south of Oxford in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Diamond Light Source conducts world-class research in virtually all fields of science and offers rewarding career opportunities.

The magnetic materials group operates four beamlines, performing research on quantum materials using soft X-ray spectroscopy, scattering and microscopy techniques (I06, I10), soft X-ray RIXS (I21), and hard resonant and non-resonant X-ray scattering (I16). Beamline I06 uses an intense polarised soft X-ray beam (80eV-2100eV) to study magnetic phenomena using primarily Photo-Emission Electron Microscopy (PEEM) or a 6T superconducting vector magnet for X-Ray Magnetic Circular/Linear Dichroism. Soft X-Ray Resonant Diffraction (SXRD) is also performed on the beamline.

We are seeking a Principal Beamline Scientist to lead the development of polarised soft x-ray spectroscopy and microscopy on beamline I06. The successful applicant will be responsible for the beamline team (3 scientists and 1 technician), the beamline operation and upgrade programmes, and will conduct personal research, primarily on I06, but also on other facilities. We encourage applications from candidates with a condensed matter physics background and an active and internationally recognized research programme on quantum materials. Expertise in soft x-ray dichroic spectroscopy, microscopy or soft x-ray diffraction is essential.

This position represents a unique opportunity to be involved in the commissioning and exploitation of an aberration corrected PEEM instrument, to be operational in 2021, that will offer state of the art capabilities for magnetic imaging in the UK. It is also an opportunity to contribute to the major upgrade of the facility, the Diamond-II programme, which is planned to start by the end of 2025. The programme includes upgrading the synchrotron to a low-emittance lattice, alongside major investments in experimental facilities, computation and infrastructure.

Diamond offers flexibility for all staff where work patterns allow. Diamond are members of the Employers Network for Equality & Inclusion and we have achieved the Athena SWAN Bronze award and the Disability Confident frameworks. Women are underrepresented and so we particularly welcome applications from suitably qualified women. If you are disabled and would like to be considered under the Guaranteed Interview Scheme, please let us know via the online application process.

The closing date for applications is 16/03/2021, however applications will be reviewed and interviewed on an ongoing basis until this vacancy is filled.  « Return to the search results
